Originally referred to as the Junior and expected to be called the Allegra, new reports out of Germany say that Opel's upcoming sub-light entrant will instead be called the Opel Adam when it arrives in European showrooms next year.

Built on a shortened version of the Corsa's floorpan, the Adam will measure just 3.7 metres at its longest point.

It will be powered by a range of naturally-aspirated engines between 1.0 and 1.4 litres in capacity, with either three or four-cylinder layouts.

These new engines will also be among the first Opel powertrains to be fully Euro 6 compliant, and all will feature direct injection.

A 1.6 litre diesel and 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine are also slated to be introduced post-launch, and an all-electric commuter version has also been rumoured.

In Europe at least, Opel won't be gunning for mass-market sales with the Adam. Instead, it will seek to position the sub-light hatchback as a premium offering, taking on the likes of the Fiat 500, Audi A1 and MINI Cooper.

"We're not interested in putting a small car out just to grow market share," said GM Europe boss Nick Reilly earlier this year.

“The new car will have a premium price for its segment”.

The Opel Adam is expected to make its motorshow debut in Paris this September, with European sales beginning in early 2013.

An Australian release for the Adam has not been confirmed.
