New South Wales' new Vehicle Safety Compliance Certification Scheme (VSCCS) has won the approval of the state's motoring bodies, garnering praise from the Motor Traders Association (MTA) and the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA).

The scheme, which came into effect on December 19, has been designed to better regulate the inspection and registration of modified vehicles.

VSCCS does not change the existing vehicle standards and the rules regarding modifications have not been changed.

"The VSCCS provides greater protection for road users and creates a more streamlined method for people to have certificates issued,” MTA CEO James McCall said.

"The MTA believes better regulation of compliance certificates will be achieved under the new scheme. It was long overdue for an update".

AAAA Director Stuart Charity described the new system as a "significant benefit" for modifiers, removing the confusion and difficulties of the old certification scheme.

"As the VSCCS gathers momentum, I see NSW motorists benefiting from improvements in certification services, with greater access and a streamlined process for the certification of vehicles," Mr Charity said.

"With the VSB 14 now being available as a guidance document, vehicle modifiers have clear direction on requirements to obtain certification."
