New South Wales Police Minister Troy Grant has attacked a modified version of the popular Grand Theft Auto gaming series.

The version has been altered to contain NSW Police vehicles and officers, and is accurate enough to include even local area command identifiers.

Players are able to run down, shoot or kill NSW Police officers within the game, and Mr Grant has labelled the new version “perverse”.

“[The game] gives the gamer a false impression about what the role of police is,” Mr Grant said, speaking with Seven News.

"There's a fear that this desensitises people to the real risk the police face and I find it offensive.”

'GTA' is known for its violent game play, and such scenarios included in the modified version are police officers shooting at characters even after they’ve been arrested.

Other NSW emergency services have also entered the game, including Fire And Rescue NSW.

NSW Police said it plans to investigate and speak with the game’s creators.
