They don’t come up often, and each is one of a kind in every state, but one of NSW’s early issue number plates, 29, provided a rare opportunity when offered for auction this week.

The record-setting plate provided a new benchmark, fetching $745,000 dollars, surpassing the previous record holder by $56,000.

The previous most-expensive plate title belonged to NSW number plate 2, which sold for $689,000 in 2003, prior to that Victoria’s 21 held the record for a two-digit plate, fetching $530,000 last year.

First issued in 1915, 29 was originally affixed to a Minerva (the company itself ceased to exist in 1956) belonging to Mr MacCormick of Macquarie Street, Sydney.

Alongside the number plate sold this week at the Shannons Autumn Classic Auction, the most expensive car of the day went to a restored four-speed manual 1970 XT Falcon GT finished in Yellow Ochre with a black vinyl roof, which went for $180,000.
