NRMA Calls For NSW Road Sign Audit As Speed Camera Fines Fall

A 53 percent drop in fines issued from two of the more profitable camera sites in New South Wales has been attributed to clear new warning signs.

Changes to the signs - at Craigend St, Darlinghurst and Ryde Road, West Pymble - included a larger design and a new description of "Red Light Speed Camera" replacing the earlier "Safety Cameras" text.

According to NRMA Motoring & Services, the success of the new signs in warning motorists of the cameras should move the Roads & Maritime Services (RMS) to conduct an assessment of all high-earning camera sites across the state.

“When the public can see that there’s a red light/speed camera at a blackspot they slow down which reduces the risk of dangerous crashes,” NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said.

“The numbers are staggering; NRMA’s intensive campaign last year to get the State Government to replace confusing signage with clearer, unobscured warning signs has made these crash blackspots much safer and is also helping motorists avoid fines and demerit points."

Ms Machin said that many camera warning signs remain hard to spot, pointing to major roads as a key point, with the warning signs often positioned on the opposite side of the road.

The NRMA wants the RMS to use data collected from each camera to identify problem locations and conduct an assessment of the more dangerous and high-earning sites.

“Safety at these crash black spots can often be improved with some fairly simple changes and we’d like to see more of the camera revenue that now goes straight into road safety being spent on fixing the roads to make them safer."

“Appropriately placed cameras play a vital road safety role and if the community is to have confidence that they are there for safety reasons only, then they must be clearly visible and clearly signposted.”
