Joining the Japanese-market Serena minivan, the X-Trail adds a cruise control system that is capable of maintaining a safe following distance, bringing the car to a complete stop, and maintaining the vehicle’s lane position without the need for driver assistance.
Having recently updated the X-Trail for Australia, NIssan added features including autonomous emergency braking (with pedestrian detection for the top-spec Ti and TL models) but the inclusion of distance-keeping cruise control on the TI grade falls short of the full ProPilot range of abilities.
The X-Trail for Japan also includes Intelligent Park Assist on all grades, allowing the car to automatically park itself - another feature missing from the Australian specifications list.
As with the Aussie X-Trail and US-market Nissan Rogue, the Japanese X-Trail features updated styling with a deeper grille, new tail lights, and revised front bumper, but unlike the local X-Trail and its range of 2.0-litre, 2.5-litre petrol, or 2.0-litre diesel engines the domestic X-Trail comes with a choice of either a 2.0-litre petrol, or 2.0-litre petrol-electric hybrid.
While ProPilot cruise control has missed the boat for the current X-Trail, Nissan has previously promised that the system will make its way to Australia, with 10 mainstream vehicles from Nissan and Infiniti set to receive the technology by 2020, with the updated Qashqai widely tipped to be the first local model to introduce the system.
