Nissan has kicked off 2014 with a single teaser image of a new concept, due to be unveiled at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.

Continuing a recent practice of carmakers of giving unimaginative names to concepts, Nissan has dubbed its latest creation “Sports Sedan Concept”.

As the name suggests, the concept previews a new sports sedan for the Japanese carmaker. The teaser image appears to be the Maxima-sized concept first seen in pictures only at the Nissan 360 event in August last year.

Nissan’s luxury brand, Infiniti, will also be at Detroit with the new high-performance Q50 Eau Rouge.

The ‘regular’ Infiniti Q50 and the Sports Sedan Concept appear to share some minor rear styling similarities, but it remains to be seen if the two concepts – both sports sedans - will share any significant mechanical content.

"The Sports Sedan Concept offers an advanced look at a future production sports sedan. It previews a new energetic design direction that amplifies Nissan's legendary approach of applying sports car principles to a sedan,” Nissan said in a short statement.

Nissan recently launched the slightly smaller Altima sedan in Australia, which replaces the slow-selling Maxima in local showrooms.

Whether Nissan plans to bring the production-version of the Sports Sedan Concept to Australia or not is unclear, but the new model could potentially give Nissan’s local arm something appealing to tie-in with its V8 Supercars racing program, alongside the Altima.
