Nissan has given its first official look at the second-generation of the its Leaf EV with the tagline “amazing things are worth waiting for.”

But for now that’s all the Japanese company has to say about its green hatch, and as is so often the case with teaser images there’s not too much to see. Apart from an intricately detailed headlight with a ‘floating’ LED light bar signature.

Nissan has given some pointers as to what to expect from the new model, having already showcased its Piloted Drive autonomous systems in prototype form in the current Leaf.

Previous reports also suggest that buyers will be offered a range of battery options (similar to how Tesla offers its vehicles) with a new range-topping 60kWh battery enabling up to 500 kilometres of range from a single charge, a significant step-up from the current Leaf’s 250km maximum in Europe and 170km in Australia.

Styling is also expected to take a more dynamic form, following the themes established by the 2015 IDS concept, which incidentally also runs an electric drivetrain and autonomous technology, putting it as a clear indication of where the Leaf is headed.

Full details of the new Leaf will be released later this year, with Nissan set to reveal its electric hatch bit-by-bit over the coming months.
