After a long lead-up, Nissan has confirmed that its Nismo performance sub-brand will be coming to Australia from 2017.

Though the Nismo branding includes cars like the Juke and Micra in overseas markets, Nissan Australia is starting with the GT-R Nismo which will hit Australian shores in February 2017 priced from $299,000 (plus on-road costs).

Where the standard NIssan GT-R spans from $189,000 to $227,000 powered by a 419kW/632Nm twin-turbocharged 3.8 litre V6 engine, the GT-R Nismo will step up to an even more ferocious 441kW/652Nm state of tune, thanks in part to high-flow large diametres turbos as used on the GT-R Nismo GT3 race car.

Other GT-R mechanical elements carry over, including the GT-R all-wheel-drive system and six-speed dual-clutch automatic, but aerodynamics, suspension, and even the seats have all been given a Nismo-specific tweak.

“Nismo is an exciting addition to our Australian business,” said Richard Emery, CEO of Nissan Australia

“The Nismo brand is already well known in Australia through its heritage and motorsport success. It is great news that Australia will now have access to Nismo products, starting with the mighty GT-R Nismo.”

As a result of limited supply, the first GT-R Nismo cars will be allocated to Nissan’s “most loyal GT-R customers” with previous GT-R owners to be contacted by Nissan with an invitation to purchase.

Nissan has not confirmed if other Nismo variants, like the 370Z Nismo, are in line for an Australian release, but with the V6-powered 370Z approaching retirement it seems as if the GT-R could be the sole product waving the Nismo flag here..

Overseas the Juke, Micra (badged as the March Nimo is Japan) and Note (which isn’t available in Australia) are offered with Nismo packages. Nissan has also previewed a 180kW Nismo variant of the Pulsar, with the Sentra Nismo concept, though a production version is yet to eventuate.
