Nissan has reportedly filed to trademark a new logo that combines a very familiar 'R' graphic with the word 'hybrid', stirring speculation of a new green mean machine.

Incorporated into Nissan's established Pure Drive badge, the R-Hybrid moniker could soon appear on new electricity-boosted performance models.

It has also been widely reported that Nissan is considering (or already developing) a hybrid powertrain for the next GT-R, joining a growing number of sports cars benefiting from hybrid systems.

Petrol-electric models are now appearing across the performance spectrum, from LaFerrari and Porsche's 918, to the upcoming BMW i8 and Honda NSX heroes. Mitsubishi is also believed to be looking at hybrid tech for the next Evolution.

It could be sometime before we see the R-Hybrid badge appear on a production model however, with the next GT-R not expected to debut until around 2017.

But, according to US magazine Car & Driver, it could even be the current GT-R that gets a petrol-electric hybrid upgrade - or variant model - in the next year.

Whatever Nissan is planning on the green front, we can at least look forward to the decidedly non-hybrid GT-R Nismo, developed together with the Williams Advanced Engineering Team.
