Nissan's new global sedan, revealed in 2010 at the Guangzhou Auto Show, will go on sale in Australia this coming August.
Wearing the familiar 'Sunny' name in China, and a 'Versa' badge in the US, the new model will be known here as the Almera.
The new sedan will join the Micra hatch at the light end of Nissan's line-up, and while local engine details have not been announced, the overseas model is powered by the same 75kW/136Nm 1.5 litre unit driving the Micra.
Both cars utilise Nissan's V platform, with MacPherson strut suspension up front and a torsion beam arrangement at the rear.
As with the returning Pulsar and the upcoming Altima, the Almera features Nissan's new family grille design and wave-like character lines.
“With Pulsar sedan and hatch and the all-new Altima set to reach Australia in 2013, Nissan is strengthening its passenger car range as we seek to reach our target of becoming the Number One importer in the Australian car market,” Nissan Australia CEO Bill Peffer said.
In Australia, the Almera will join the fight in the light-car segment. This segment currently sits behind small cars as the second best-selling category in Australia.
Its rivals will include the top-selling Toyota Yaris and Mazda2, along with the Holden Barina, Ford Fiesta and the popular new-generation Kia Rio.
