Nissan's new Almera light car is now on sale in Australia, arriving as a sedan companion to the Micra, launched here in 2010.

Priced from $16,990 (plus on-roads) and topping out at $20,990, the Almera is offered in two trim grades: entry-level ST, and up-spec Ti.

In Australia, the Almera will go head-to-head with the Holden Barina, Ford Fiesta, Honda City, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, and category leader Toyota Yaris.

As with the returning Pulsar and the upcoming Altima, the Almera features Nissan's new family grille design and wave-like character lines.

The Almera shares Nissan's global V-platform with the Micra, although the sedan gets a 100mm longer whelbase, and measures a full  715mm longer.

The extra length gives the Almera useful interior and storage space, with the 490 litre boot bettering the Hyundai Accent by 25 litres and the Toyota Yaris by 15 litres.

Power for the Almera is provided by the same 75kW/139Nm 1.5 litre petrol four cylinder currently found in the Micra, sending power to the front wheels through a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption is listed at 6.3 l/100km with the manual, and 6.7 l/100km with the automatic.

The Almera's suspension package, like the Micra, employs MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam arrangement at the rear.
