Past versions of the Dodge Viper have given the car 'a reputation'. As a balls-to-the-wall, heart-in-your-throat thrill ride, its cabin has always been the domain of expert drivers and those who should know better.

That could be about to change however, with reports this week pointing to a more refined snake that will, according to Dodge boss Reid  Bigland, "appeal to a broader segment of the market".

Speaking with US industry paper Automotive News, Bigland said that while the current model can be considered a (just barely) road-legal race car, the new Viper will be a more manageable proposition.

"It was a little crude in the past, and to a certain extent that was its appeal because you really needed to have your wits about you when you got behind the wheel to keep that thing on the road. And that thrill of driving a Viper was kind of unlike any other," Bigland told Automotive News.

Bigland stressed that fans of the Viper legend should expect the same "thrilling ride" of previous models, but with more creature comforts - and likely a few more driver aids.

"Those who were attracted to the Viper in the past will certainly be attracted to this new Viper. Guaranteed," Bigland promised.

The new Viper is expected to make its debut toward the middle of next year.
