Images of what is purported to be Toyota’s anticipated new Fortuner off-roader have surfaced in the Indian and Thai press this week.
The new SUV is shown in a trio of low-quality shots that appear to be marketing images, along with a blurry fourth photo taken outdoors.
If authentic, these images reveal that the SUV will wear a unique look that sets it apart from the HiLux body that, like its predecessor, the new Fortuner will likely be based on.
Spy photos of the new HiLux, published in February, reveal larger headlights and a broader grille than the sharp SUV shown in these photos.
The new Fortuner appears to be a more style-focused offering from all angles, with a new upswept Murano-like rear quarter window replacing the Mercedes-inspired design featured at the rear of the current model - along with the many past and current SUVs of other brands.
There is also word that, unlike the current model, the new Fortuner could come to Australia as a rival to 4x4 SUV models like the Ford Everest, Holden Colorado 7 and Isuzu D-Max twins, and the next-generation Mitsubishi Challenger.
It is already known that Toyota’s Australian dealers are pressing for the new Fortuner, and a debut here could even see the local return of the 4Runner name.
If these images prove to be ‘the real McCoy’, watch for an official unveiling to occur in the coming weeks.
