The new Range Rover has made its local debut at the Australian International Motor Show before going on sale in January. Pricing will start at $168,900 for the 3.0 litre TDV6 HSE.

Penned under the gaze of Land Rover's long-time design boss, Gerry McGovern, this is an all-new Range Rover, taking cues from the Evoque inside and out, but still definitely a 'Rangey'

Amazingly, the new car is up to 420kg lighter, a figure attributable to the new aluminium monocoque replacing the steel of the old car.

A new air-suspension design will retain the traditional plush ride but also keep the big SUV flat through the corners.

There's a range of three engines available, two diesels in V6 (190kW) and V8 (250kW) versions and a supercharged V8 petrol good for 375kW and a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

The diesels have come in for some eco-engineering - including stop-start and regenerative braking - with fuel consumption cut by up to 22 percent, the TDV6 delivering a claimed 7.5l/100km.
