The first local media drive of Ford’s new Mondeo will occur in April, the carmaker has confirmed, with a showroom debut expected to come in the second quarter.

Making its debut first in 2012 as North America’s new Fusion, production delays saw the Mondeo’s European launch postponed, causing a knock-on effect for Ford’s Australian arm.

The delay saw the ageing third-generation Mondeo concede more ground to the new versions of established rivals in the new Toyota Camry and Mazda6.

The incoming Mondeo has spent the past six months in a cold war with the market-leading Camry, with Ford highlighting the benefits of its new midsizer against Toyota’s fleet favourite.

The value of Ford’s marketing campaign will be put to the test in just over a month, when the new Mondeo arrives with two bodystyles, six trim grades, two petrol engines and one Hybrid Camry-bettering diesel unit.
