UPDATE: The new Clubman has gone official. Article updated.
The new MINI Clubman has now swung its barn doors open to all-comers, just hours after a revealing set of leaked marketing shots surfaced online.
Now unveiled officially ahead of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut in September, MINI's new second-generation Clubman
It has been known for sometime that the new Clubman would take on a more conventional look, doing away with the quirky lopsided design of its predecessor.
The new 'little big' MINI showcases a five-door wagon design that retains the Clubman's iconic van-like ‘barn’ doors at the rear.
Its look and shape is otherwise standard fare for the new-generation MINI range, however, building on the styling of the past two generations while going larger in most directions.
In its new form, the 2016 Clubman measures 270mm longer and 73mm wider than the previous model, which measured 3960mm long and 1684mm wide.
At 1441mm, this new Clubman is also around 20mm taller than its predecessor.
And, in comparison to the new 5-door Cooper hatch, the Clubman is again 270mm longer, while benefiting from a 100mm longer wheelbase.
The related BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, which rides on the same platform as the new MINI, measures 4342mm long, 1800mm wide and 1555mm tall - making it 119mm longer, 44mm narrower and 105mm taller than the Clubman.
Rear storage in the new Clubman has grown to 360 litres with the rear seats in their upright position - outdoing the Cooper Hatch by 82 litres and even the Countryman SUV by 10 litres - while seats-down capacity is a useful 1250 litres.
Australian engine options are still to be confirmed, but, in Europe, the new Clubman will be offered with a range of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel options.
100kW/220Nm three-cylinder 1.5 litre turbo petrol engine
acceleration (0-100 km/h): 9.1 seconds (automatic: 9.1 seconds)
top speed: 205 km/h
average fuel consumption l/100km: 5.3 - 5.1 litres
110kW/330Nm four-cylinder 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine
acceleration (0-100 km/h): 8.6 seconds (automatic: 8.5 seconds)
top speed: 212 km/h
average fuel consumption l/100km: 4.4 - 4.1 litres
141kW/280Nm four-cylinder 2.0 litre turbo petrol
acceleration (0-100 km/h): 7.2 seconds (automatic: 7.1 seconds)
top speed: 228 km/h
average fuel consumption: 6.3 - 6.2 litres (5.9 - 5.8 litres auto)
The new MINI Clubman will hit Australia in the fourth quarter of 2015, with pricing and specifications to be confirmed closer to launch.
