This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Lotus Elise, and although the lightweight roadster has seen a progression of through updates over the years, it’s still essentially the same car under the skin as the original.

That’s set to stay the same for a while longer too, with 2020 slated as the target date for a new Elise.

Unlike the the stillborn 2010 Elise concept, which previewed the Elise a more luxurious, more powerful, heavier and more expensive sportscar, the new Elise is set to continue the current car’s light and simpler ethos.

Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales confirmed with Britain’s Autocar that the new model would be ready for a 2020 debut, while maintaining the current car’s approach to weight reduction.

“Today, we are still setting benchmarks for lightweight cars, just as Colin Chapman did when he founded the company. It is a philosophy we want to continue, no matter what car we build,” Gales said.

A target weight of 900kg is believed to be one of the new Elise’s project goals, which although heavier than previous generations, has been set with stringent US crash regulations in mind.

The existing engine supply arrangement with Toyota is also set to continue with the new generation Elise, and as with the current version and its US-market aspirations, the new model will be supplied with automatic and manual transmissions.

Stylistically, the Elise will maintain ties with the outgoing version, which despite being in its third generation, traces its roots back to the 1996 original.
