New digital renderings have surfaced online today, potentially previewing the next-generation Honda Civic.

The images, part of an official design patent application, offer what could be our first look at the new Civic in sedan and coupe form.

Published today by enthusiast website CivicX (a name that plans ahead for the new 10th-generation range), this gallery come on the heels of Honda’s surprise Civic Coupe Concept that debuted in New York earlier this month.

If authentic, these images offer buyers a revealing glimpse not only of the coupe concept in its production form, but also the previously unseen new sedan.

Patent images rarely inspire immediate enthusiasm, but spy photos published at CivicX suggest that the coupe, at least, will boast appealing proportions.

Remarkably, the production coupe looks to have lost very few of its concept lines - although the smaller wheels, taller suspension and missing rear wing of this rendered example have scrubbed much of the two-door show car’s flair.

But, with a Type R hero model reportedly confirmed for the new coupe, we may yet see most of the concept’s styling features return.

A small optional rear spoiler and larger wheels may also appear with up-spec models in the regular coupe range.

For its new Civic sedan, Honda looks to be pushing a more sporting angle, replacing the current model’s fairly anonymous lines with a long coupe-like profile, sharper lines and a wider track under lightly flared guards.

The face of the new Civic will build on the look established with Honda’s latest models, including the Odyssey, Jazz, City and HR-V lines, with a broad wing-like ‘Flying H’ grille garnish extending into sharp back-swept headlights.

At the rear, new hooked tail lights will feature on both the sedan and coupe models, with the two-door model’s lamps extending across the length of the boot lid.

These images hint at an overall longer and wider shape for the new sedan, which conforms with the wheelbase and track of the coupe concept.

Power in the new range will be offered by a turbocharged and direct-injected 1.5 litre petrol engine, with short-shifting six-speed manual and new CVT auto transmissions confirmed.

And, if that Type R hero eventuates, the new Civic Type R hatch’s 228kW 2.0 litre turbo engine will likely be on board.

Expect the new sedan and coupe to debut sometime in 2016 - likely before the new Type R hatch makes its way to Australia…

As for an all-new hatch range, Honda has confirmed a next-generation five-door is also on the cards, with production to again be carried out in the UK.

Watch for more news to come in the months ahead.
