Holden's new 2014 Commodore range has been given a 5-Star safety rating this week by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program.

The top score is perhaps no surprise, with the VF Commodore's suite of new technologies marking a dramatic increase in standard safety equipment across the range.

From the base Evoke model through to the top Caprice V, standard safety features include the usual complement of airbags and control systems, along with a new Auto Park Assist system and seatbelt reminders at all seats.

There's also automatic-release electric park brake, Hill Hold Control and Hill Start Assist, Trailer Sway Control and ISOFIX child seat anchor points.

Up-spec models are equipped with Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Alert, Reverse Traffic Alert and Head-Up Display, and some of these can also be optioned with the lower-tier models.

This latest round of ANCAP testing saw the Commodore score 14.06 points out of a possible 16 in the frontal offset test, with an overall score of 35.06 out of 37.

The VF performed well in the side impact and whiplash tests, although its pedestrian safety is rated at a low 15.41 out of 36 points.

ANCAP says the 5-Star rating covers the entire VF range, and also the updated WN Caprice models
