Ford’s all-new Mondeo range is at last nearing its Australian launch, with full pricing and features detailed today ahead of a May showroom debut.

The new range will kick off from $32,790 for the hatch and top out at $49,340 for the wagon (before on-road costs), with a range of trim grades and engines in between.

By comparison, Toyota’s sedan-only Camry range begins at $30,490, while the Mazda6 sedan and wagon family starts from $32,540.

Powertrains in both the liftback-hatch and wagon bodies will include 2.0 litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol and 2.0 litre TDCi diesel engines.

Three trim grades will be offered across both body styles, including the familiar Ambiente, Trend and Titanium models.

Powering entry models on the petrol front is a 149kW/345Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged engine, while the mid- and top-spec Trend and Titanium models boost output from the same engine to 177kW (torque is unchanged at 345Nm).

All diesel models are driven by a 132kW/400Nm 2.0 litre engine.

All three engines, petrol and diesel, are matched to six-speed automatic transmissions: SelectShift in petrol models and PowerShift in diesel models. All variants are front-wheel-drive.

Ford late last year trumpeted the fuel efficiency of its new diesel Mondeo.

Ranging from 5.1 to 5.3 l/100km (hatch/wagon), the diesel model's figures compare favourably to the Mazda6 diesel (5.4 l/100km) and the petrol-electric Camry Hybrid (5.2 l/100km).

Fuel consumption for the petrol models falls between 8.2 and 8.5 l/100km, depending on the trim grade and body style.

The new Mondeo measures 4871mm long, making it just 78mm shorter than the Falcon it does not officially replace, while weighing 25kg less than the previous Mondeo.

The new Mondeo also debuts with Ford's new integral link rear suspension setup, promising improved comfort while retaining the stiffness needed for greater steering and handling. A torque vectoring system and new anti-roll bars also contribute to improved handling.

Electric Power Assisted Steering is also featured for the first time in the Mondeo range, matched to the Comfort, Normal and Sport chassis settings in the Continuous Control Damping system of high-spec models.

The first Australian-delivered model to be built on Ford's new CD-segment platform, the new Mondeo claims a 10 percent increase in stiffness, while its more aerodynamic profile cuts cabin noise by a significant 3dB.

Highlights in the Mondeo range will include Ford's SYNC2 infotainment system with an eight-inch touch display, LED daytime lights and LED tail lamps, heated exterior mirrors, dual-zone climate control and digital radio.

Other standout technologies include Emergency Assistance, Adaptive Cruise Control, adaptive LED headlamps and a Wi-Fi hotspot, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection and MyKey.

The Mondeo will also be the first Ford in Australia to feature nine airbags, including inflatable rear seat belts, as standard across the range.

Greater attention has also been paid to interior materials, with a soft-touch instrument panel and new chrome surrounds and highlights featured.

The Titanium grade also boasts a full-length panoramic glass sunroof in wagon form, while the Titanium hatch gets the sunroof and a powered tailgate.

Rear storage capacity in the hatch is listed at 557 litres when loaded to the roof, growing to 1356 litres with the rear seats laid flat. Those figures expand to 712 and 1585 litres in the wagon.

Braked towing capacity is rated at 1200kg for petrol models and 1600kg for diesel models. All list unbraked towing at 750kg.
