2014 FORD KA

Ford has unveiled its next-generation Ka hatch this week, revealing a conservatively styled five-door that leaves the quirky three-door Ka look behind.

Developed in Brazil, this new Ka is officially a concept, although its market-ready styling is unlikely to see many changes before it enters production.

The current Ka, revealed in 2009 and briefly the star of Bond film Quantum of Solace, shares its platform with the Fiat 500 and is a strictly three-door affair.

While the outgoing Ka wears an early incarnation of Ford's 'Kinetic' styling language, this new model has more in common with the latest Focus and the facelifted Fiesta.

Like the current model, the first-generation Ka of the 90s also carried a quirky style and offered only a three-door layout.

The reveal of this new concept confirms that the 2010 Start concept will be retired to the warehouse, with no role left to play in the Ford line-up.

The new Ka's five-door design could also boost its chances of an Australian debut, taking on the likes of the Suzuki Alto and Volkswagen Up in the tiny city-car market.

Overseas, the new Ka could replace the Australian-engineered Figo hatch in emerging markets, which saw the previous Fiesta hatch transformed into a 'new' low-budget hatch.

For now, Ford has yet to reveal technical or production details for the new Ka, but expect more to surface in the coming year.
