The coming of an all-new Honda Civic Type R was confirmed last year, but exactly what we can expect from the new hot-hatch remains a mystery.

For now, the carmker has revealed only that testing will begin on the famed Nurburgring later this year, promising that development "is going well".

Reports in recent months have suggested the new model will take on the increasingly hotter hot-hatch market with a powerful new turbocharged engine.

Yes, the Type R's quick-but-could-be-quicker days look to be behind it, with power figures well beyond 200kW expected to push the hatch to new performance heights.

Speaking with Britain's Auto Express last year, Honda R&D engineer Yasuhisa Arai reportedly confirmed a 2.0 litre turobcharged engine for the new model, producing nearly 225kW.

With those sorts of figures, the Civic Type R will move into the top tier of the hot hatch market, rivalling the Megane RS, the Focus ST and a host of others.

"We have an idea of the products our rivals are developing and regardless of what anyone else produces, our car will be the fastest front-wheel-drive model around the Nurburgring when it goes on sale,” Arai said, echoing recent comments from Honda boss Takanobu Ito.

"We will do whatever we need to in order to make that happen."

This week, Honda UK boss Dave Hodgetts is understood to have confirmed with the same paper that the new model will produce "at least" 198kW (265bhp), but 225kW remains the target.

It has also been reported that the new CTR will get all-wheel-steering for increased speed in corners, along with a mechanical limited-slip differential.

The new Civic Type R is expected to hit showrooms sometime in 2015. Click here more reports on the new Civic Type R.
