A straight-six engine has been locked in as the power source for BMW's new M3 sedan and Coupe (the latter rumoured to be named M4), according to overseas reports this week.

Enthusiast blog BimmerPost reports that BMW North America President Ludwig Willisch confirmed the choice of a straight six:

The report claims that a V6 design had been under consideration - potentially one based on the current M3's S65 eight-cylinder engine - before approval of the straight-six configuration.

Willisch will likely be well connected with the project, having previously been president of M GmbH, and later in charge of European sales before a move to the US.

The new M3's engine has been the subject of numerous 'insider' reports and intense speculation, with fans and the motoring press divided on whether the new car will pack a vee- or straight-six.

The new engine will likely weigh in at round 3.0 litres with a power target of around 330kW, to comfortably surpass the E90/E92's 309kW output.

With test cars spied all over Europe, the new M3 and purported M4 will likely debut in the coming year - no doubt preceded by a long teaser campaign from M's PR department.
