The new system builds on the technology introduced with the current R8 LMX flagship, utilising full-LED headlights and new laser high-beam technology.
“The special appeal of laser lighting is that it uses high?intensity laser diodes, which generate a lot of light energy from a very small component,” Audi says of the new system.
“Compared to LED high?beam headlights, laser high?beams attain nearly twice the lighting range.”
Each headlight assembly features one laser module with four high-intensity laser diodes, producing a white light with a blue signature tint.
LED headlights will be standard with the new R8, although the laser high-beams will be an optional extra.
As for the new R8 itself, this image offers a first look at the 2015 supercar’s styling ahead of its Geneva Motor Show debut next month.
The new R8 is expected to maintain the same dimensions as the outgoing model, while wearing a new look already previewed with the latest TT range.
