Audi has announced the initial model line-up for its all-new 2016 A4 midsizer with pricing to match ahead of its local arrival in February next year.

Four variants will be offered to kick-start the range, with three petrol engines joined by a single diesel model - all four-cylinder and all turbocharged.

From February, customers will need at least $55,500 plus on-road costs to get into a new A4, with this amount buying the 110kW/250Nm 1.4 litre TFSI S-tronic Sport.

Next in line is the 2.0 litre TFSI S-tronic Sport which brings a new 140kW/320Nm engine to the A4 range in Australia, with prices starting from $60,900.

The sole diesel model is the 2.0 TDI Quattro S-tronic Sport which offers up 140kW and 400Nm - priced from $66,900.

Topping the launch range will be the 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-tronic Sport with prices starting from $69,900 plus on-roads. The 2.0 TFSI Quattro packs 185kW and 370Nm and can hit 100km/h from rest in 5.8 seconds.

If you haven’t guessed already, Audi’s Multitronic CVT is no more in the A4 range following a decision by the German carmaker midway through last year to phase out the transmission.

Instead, all models from launch will be matched solely with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Under European testing, the 2.0 TDI is the most fuel frugal with a best combined figure of 4.4 l/100km, while the 1.4 TFSI’s figure is 4.9 l/100km.

The 2.0 TFSI actually pips the smaller 1.4 litre unit for fuel usage at 4.8 l/100km, while the 2.0 TFSI Quattro uses 5.9 l/100km. All engines are Euro6 emissions compliant.

Pricing compares favourably with the outgoing A4 range in Australia, which currently starts at $57,000 plus on-road costs.

While the A4 is unquestionably an important model for Audi in Australia, the German carmaker revealed that the once-mighty seller no longer holds the same prominence in its local range.

In 1993, the A4 accounted for 90 percent of Audi sales in Australia, but the winds of change and a new love affair with SUVs has seen that figure shrink to 10 percent.
