UPDATE: new X1 has gone official. Read about it here.

BMW’s new-generation X1 SUV has surfaced early, revealed in new leaked marketing photos this morning.

These new shots, obtained by enthusiast site WorldCarFans, offer a first clear look at the new small SUV ahead of its official unveiling later today.

As expected, BMW has given the new X1 a more conventional SUV shape, doing away with the awkward ‘tall hatchback’ design of the current model.

More than just a styling makeover, the 2016 X1 rides on a new front-wheel-drive platform - which will still include all-wheel-drive models - moving away the rear-wheel-drive design that features with most BMW models.

In its move to front-wheel-drive, the new X1 joins the 2 Series Active Tourer on the ‘UKL’ architecture that also underpins the new MINI range.

The change in architecture will also see the X1 loaded with new powertrains, which are expected to include the same three- and four-cylinder mills offered with the 2AT and the Cooper models.

But, with the switch to front-wheel-drive, the current model’s six-cylinder ‘35i’ model is unlikely to return.

The absence of a big six is unlikely to mean no high-powered option, though, and tuning arm BMW M is already believed to be preparing a top-shelf hero to rival the Audi RSQ3 and the AMG GLA 45.

Watch for the new X1 to appear later today, ahead of a world premiere at September's Frankfurt Motor Show.
