UPDATE: new X1 has gone official. Read about it here.
BMW’s new-generation X1 SUV has surfaced early, revealed in new leaked marketing photos this morning.
These new shots, obtained by enthusiast site WorldCarFans, offer a first clear look at the new small SUV ahead of its official unveiling later today.
As expected, BMW has given the new X1 a more conventional SUV shape, doing away with the awkward ‘tall hatchback’ design of the current model.
More than just a styling makeover, the 2016 X1 rides on a new front-wheel-drive platform - which will still include all-wheel-drive models - moving away the rear-wheel-drive design that features with most BMW models.
The change in architecture will also see the X1 loaded with new powertrains, which are expected to include the same three- and four-cylinder mills offered with the 2AT and the Cooper models.
But, with the switch to front-wheel-drive, the current model’s six-cylinder ‘35i’ model is unlikely to return.
Watch for the new X1 to appear later today, ahead of a world premiere at September's Frankfurt Motor Show.
