The Victorian Automobile Chamber Of Commerce (VACC) is calling for motorcycle lane filtering laws to be introduced into Victoria, following new laws soon to be introduced in New South Wales.
The new laws follow a successful trial of lane filtering in NSW last year, restricted to a small corner of Sydney’s CBD, with the practice set to become lawful across the state on July 1, 2014.
The VACC says the Victorian Government should follow the lead of NSW, using July 1 as the starting date for lane filtering laws..
The Chamber says its position on lane filtering has been supported by state-based motorcycle and scooter groups, as removing two-wheeled powered vehicles from the traffic flow will improve safety and congestion.
“Filtering is currently illegal in Victoria, and this has to change,” VACC Executive Director, David Purchase, said.
“There is no reason why lane filtering should not be legal in Victoria. We accept the findings of the NSW trial and call for 1 July 2014 to also be the date of legalised lane filtering in Victoria.”
Mr Purchase said lane filtering was recommended by a 2012 ‘Parliamentary Road Safety Committee Inquiry into Motorcycle Safety’; a position the VACC supported in 2012 and continues to support today.
The inquiry also recommended abolishing the motorcycle safety levy, creating an independent office of road safety data and establishing a Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week.
The VACC says the Victorian Government should adopt the additional findings of the inquiry immediately, with a public awareness campaign to accompany any new motorcycle laws.
“These recommendations were made more than 12 months ago. So far, no action has been taken; it’s simply not good enough,” Mr Purchase said.
VACC is also calling for changes to the Road Traffic Act to allow powered two-wheeled vehicles to use bus lanes in Melbourne, following a successful trial on Hoddle Street.
