Mitsubishi has given the first official glimpse of its new small SUV.

The new compact SUV is set to join the range between the current ASX and Outlander as the brand moves away from passenger cars and towards an SUV-centric range.

Though the final details of the new SUV are hidden from view in the first teaser image, the sharply angled design, slanted C-pillar and wedge-shaped glass house all bear a close resemblance to Mitsubishi’s previous XR-PHEV and XR-PHEV II concepts.

As with the ASX, which is expected to adopt a slightly smaller overall size for its next generation, the new SUV will wear a traditional five-door, five-seat cabin.

Mitsubishi refers to a coupe-like design, leading some industry outlets to speculate that the new model could revive the Eclipse name, previously applied to a North American coupe model sold between 1989 and 2011.

Powertrain details are still to be confirmed, but a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol and a version of the Outander’s 2.2 litre turbo diesel are the most likely engine options and mated to a six-speed manual or a CVT automatic for the petrol model and a six-speed automatic for the diesel with both front- and all-wheel drive are expected.

Following the initial launch Mitsubishi is also expected to introduce a plug-in hybrid variant, based on a development of the Outlander PHEV’s petrol-electric drivetrain.

More details of the new SUV are expected in the lead up to the Geneva Motor Show in March.
