Mitsubishi has released the first images and production details of its upcoming Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut.

Based on the PX-MiEV concept and sharing its body with the new petrol and diesel range, the Outlander PHEV arrives as the latest model in Mitsubishi's growing green line-up.

As with the regular model, the Outlander PHEV will carry much of the concept's styling, while adding a number of cosmetic tweaks to set it apart as the line-up's alternative-energy option.

Matching a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine to an electric motor mounted at each axle, Mitsubishi says its 'Twin Motor 4WD' configuration is a more refined alternative to conventional 4WD systems.

"In addition to decreased friction loss, Twin Motor 4WD delivers better response and finer control than conventional mechanical systems," the carmaker says.

"It accomplishes this without a propeller shaft or other mechanical components seen in conventional mechanical systems."
