As the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution notches up its seventh year in production with no replacement in sight, word from North America is that the model will continue to be sold there next year.

Reports in the Japanese press earlier this year said that Mitsubishi would be ending production of its 217kW rally-bred AWD rocket in late 2014, but a spokesperson for Mitsubishi North America has told the press that the company remains, "committed to introducing the 2015 model year Lancer Evolution".

But the future beyond the 2015 model year still looks murky.

Mitsubishi has not announced a successor to the tenth-generation Lancer Evolution, and the company is actively pursuing more profitable products like SUVs as it struggles with an ageing model line up.

Plug-in hybrids also feature strongly among the future models already announced by Mitsubishi, and we've reported earlier that the Evolution could return wearing a PHEV badge on its bootlid.

But nothing has been finalised as yet, and the tenth generation of the Lancer Evolution could very well be the last. If you want one, better get in quick.
