Mitsubishi Australia is to drop the 10-year/160,000km powertrain warranty from its Diamond Advantage warranty and servicing plan from October 1, the carmaker has confirmed.

The Diamond Advantage offering currently includes 10-year or 160,000km warranty coverage of the vehicle's powertrain, along with a five-year/130,000km new vehicle warranty. Servicing costs are also capped for the four years or 60,000km.

Mitsubishi Australia Corporate Communications Manager, Caitlin Beale, said a low number of owners accessing the additional warranty has moved the brand to focus instead on purchase value.

"We're into the eighth year of the offer now, and there's been around a 1.5 percent takeup. We're seeing that most owners reach 160,000km, or have sold their car.

"And because it's only eligible for the first owner - it's not transferable - very few owners are using the extra warranty," Ms Beale told TMR today.

"What we're trying to do is bring value back to the first owner at the time of purchase. Right now, we have to cover every single car sold as though the owner keeps it for 10 years and drives it very little."

Ms Beale said that while the deal has given the brand extra appeal, "the numbers no longer add up" on continuing the offer.

Instead, buyers will benefit from new pricing - already available with the updated Lancer and ASX ranges revealed in recent months. Buyers can get into a 2013 ASX Aspire for $8000 less than in 2012, and the Lancer range now starts $1700 lower than before.

"Buyers will see more competitive pricing as new models and updates come in," Ms Beale said.

The carmaker's next big launch will be the brand-new Outlander, which will appear at the Australian International Motor Show in October, going on sale in the following month.

The Diamond Advantage plan will retain its existing five-year warranty, along with a four-year capped-price servicing plan and a roadside assistance service.

Roadside assistance will be offered to all new owners for the first year, with subsequent years requiring the vehicle to be serviced under the Diamond Advantage capped-price servicing plan.

Existing customers, and any customers that take delivery before October 1, will continue to benefit from the extended powertrain warranty cover.
