If the brand's chief designer has anything to say about it, and we suspect he does, MINI's tough little future-previewing Rocketman concept could enter production in coming years.

Reports out of the US this week point to the Rocketman as a potential addition to the bottom end of the MINI line-up, following talk earlier this year of a 2014 production debut.

Speaking with website Inside Line this week, MINI design boss Anders Warming said the Rocketman is on his Christmas list, describing the concept as a means of claiming "the true heritage of the brand".

Earlier reports suggest the Rocketman could share its platform with BMW's upcoming i3 city car, which has been engineered to accommodate both electric and conventional powertrains.

For its part, BMW has already confirmed that the i platforms and technology will be made available across the BMW group, and there may be no better fit than a new city-car-sized MINI.
