Don't expect to see MINI's latest retro-styled and future-focused concept on the road anytime soon, but you might see a few of its features in upcoming models.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the MINI Rocketman offers the brand's most pint-sized design yet, along with the requisite innovative features we've come to expect of show cars.

Speaking with British magazine Autocar, BMW sales and marketing chief Ian Robertson said that while a smaller MINI may not be on the cards, new concept and production technologies from both MINI and BMW will appear in new models from the British brand.

“The themes in the car are not just about a smaller Mini,” Robertson told Autocar.

“Lightweight construction, and new types of components will go on to Minis. [Technology from the] BMW i-concept will be available to all members of the group.”

Most telling is Robertson's mention of BMW's i technology. Already, the MINI brand has been heavily involved in BMW's electric vehicle development, with the MINI E test program playing a major role in the group's development of its next-generation ultra-green vehicles - including the i brand.

For MINI buyers, this means we can expect to see either (or both) hybrid and electric members in the near future's line-up, utilising the small and ultra-efficient powertrains developed by BMW for its i range.

Beyond technology, the Rocketman likely offers a glimpse at the next-generation MINI's styling also, like the Countryman-based Paceman concept before it.

The arching taillights are an unlikely addition to the brand's design language, but the large LED-ringed headlights, more prominent grille, panoramic sunroof and even more retro-styled interior could all make their way to production in some form.
