MINI ROCKETMAN

It's one concept after another from MINI. After the unveiling in December of its Countryman-based Paceman concept, MINI has today revealed another: the Rocketman.

The online unveiling of the Rocketman follows speculation that MINI would bring a new concept to Geneva that looks to the past, drawing its proportions from the smaller Mini models of the 60s.

And thus it is (well, nearly): the Rocketman is a mere 3419mm long, making it about 250mm longer than original Mini, and around 280mm shorter than the current MINI Cooper.

Width is a different matter, with the new concept measuring 1907mm wide - a full 223mm wider through the middle than the current MINI. Its low-slung look is helped by its height however, measuring 1398mm tall, or 9mm shorter than the 2011 MINI Cooper.

Billed as a "3+1 seater," the Rocketman gets two front seats and a single fixed rear seat, along with a simpler fold-down seat in the back for a fourth occupant.

Access to the Rocketman's interior comes courtesy of a few Transformer-like tricks, including doors that extend straight out from the body, a tailgate that rolls out like a drawer, and a tailgate that hinges almost from the centre of the Union Jack-emblazoned panoramic glass room.

The package is rounded out with custom 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, a centre-mounted '3D' display and in-car internet connectivity.

Whether the Rocketman will makes its way to production in some form another remains to be seen, but in this regard, MINI's record is about even.
