MINI has announced a fresh supply of its popular Cooper Ray variant, introduced earlier this year as a new entry-level model in the Cooper Hatch range.

Originally limited to just 300 units, the launch of the $28,800 drive-away Ray helped MINI boost its July sales by 53.7 percent compared to the same period last year.

MINI Australia says it has secured an additional 200 of the MINI One-based Ray cars - but that's the last of them, for 2011 at least.

The Ray is powered by a 1.6 litre petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the combination delivering 72kW and 153Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption for the Ray is listed at 5.4 l/100km, and MINI says it will cover the 0-100km/h run in 10.5 seconds - "a mere one-tenth of a second" short of the regular MINI Cooper in automatic form.

Features unique to the Ray are mirror caps and side scuttles available in six different - and bright - colours, including Alien green, Lemon yellow, Flash white, Energy pink, Vitamin orange and Shocking blue.

The available body colour choices are Pepper white, Chilli red, Midnight black, British Racing Green and Velvet silver. There are also specific hub caps unique to the Ray, designed and imported from Italy.

Standard features include USB connectivity, six-speaker sound system and an on-board computer with condition-based service interval indicator (to tell you when your next service is due).

Safety features include six airbags and dynamic stability control, and the Ray also carries a 5 Star ANCAP crash safety rating.

Chilli Package Now Standard Across Range

MINI Australia has also announced that its popular Chilli options package is now standard for the MINI Cooper Hatch, Cabrio and Clubman models.

The news comes just two months after the price of the Chilli package was cut by 75 percent to $900.

“With an existing take up rate of over 60 percent, we are thrilled to announce the Chilli features as standard across MINI Hatch, Cabrio and Clubman models,” David Woollcott, National MINI Manager said.

While the equipment varies from model to model, each vehicle will feature a wheel upgrade, automatic air conditioning, and cloth / leather combination upholstery.
