BMW has released a handful of details and new teaser images for the upcoming MINI Coupe sports car, just days after it spilled the beans on the new 1 Series.

The MINI Cooper Coupe shares its platform with the iconic Cooper Hatch, but MINI promises a sportier experience thanks to a re-tuned chassis. In fact, the term 'go-kart' appears in MINI's Coupe press release no fewer than eight times.

“The new car radiates the brand’s hallmark go-kart feeling with a whole new depth of intensity and achieves the best performance statistics ever recorded by a volume-produced MINI," a MINI press release reads.

The MINI Cooper Coupe range will feature three petrol engines and one diesel, starting with a 1.6 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 90kW and 160Nm of torque.

  • 0-100km/h: 9.0 seconds
  • Fuel consumption: 5.4 l/100km

In the middle of the petrol range will be the Cooper S Coupe, powered by the same 135kW/240Nm turbocharged 1.6 litre engine driving the regular Cooper S hatch

  • 0-100km/h: 6.9 seconds
  • Fuel consumption: 5.8 l/100km

Topping the Cooper Coupe line-up will be the John Cooper Works Coupe, again utilising the same 155kW/260Nm turbocharged 1.6 litre that motivates the JCW hatch

  • 0-100km/h: 6.4 seconds
  • Fuel consumption: 7.1 l/100km

On the diesel front, a Cooper SD Coupe will be offered, its 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine producing 105kW and 305Nm of torque.

  • 0-100km/h: 7.9 seconds
  • Fuel consumption: 4.3 l/100km

When is it coming?

These latest details follow confirmation earlier this year that the MINI Coupe will make its international debut at Frankfurt in September - where it was first revealed as a concept two years ago.

As for a local launch, MINI Australia's Piers Scott told TMR in January that a launch will occur before the end of 2011.
