MINI's Coupe and Roadster twins will welcome new entry-level variants to the Australian line-up in November, slashing the price of both bodystyles by more than $8000.

Until now, both cars have been available only in power-focused S and John Cooper Works form, each driven by variants of MINI's 1.6 litre turbo engine.

Now, with the local introduction of the naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre engine, the 'price of entry' into the Coupe and Roadster party has fallen to $34,900 (Coupe, plus on-roads).

Producing 90kW and 160Nm of torque, the 1.6 four-cylinder engine promises a 0-100km/h time of nine seconds flat for the Coupe, and 9.2 seconds for the Roadster. Both models are fitted with a six-speed manual.

While those figures fall (more than) a little short of the 6.9 and 6.4-second times offered by the 135kW S and 155kW JCW models, the $8000+ price cut will have some appeal for buyers focused on style and handling.

The savings continue with fuel use, with both models listed at 5.8 and 6.1 l/100km respectively. By comparison, best figures from the S and JCW models are 6.3 l/100km and 7.3 l/100km.

Standard features for the entry Coupe and Roadster include 16-inch alloy wheels, sport seats, cruise control, auto climate control, Bluetooth hands-free kit, USB connectivity, auto headlights and auto wipers.
