MINI COOPER 5 DOOR

MINI’s first-ever conventional five-door Cooper hatch has been revealed this week, ahead of a global rollout through 2014.

Joining the new three-door hatch that hit Australia in April, the new model is known simply as the MINI Cooper 5 Door.

As expected, the new five-seater MINI shares its styling with the regular hatch, but with those extra doors the hatch is now far more practical.

While the rear passenger doors mark the obvious exterior change, the MINI 5 gets a longer wheelbase, stretched a full 72mm beyond the three-door’s 2495mm platform.

Overall length grows by 161mm to 3982mm, although the performance-focused Cooper S and Cooper SD models are longer still at 4005mm.

Boosting the five-seater's practicality, MINI has also made its new hatch 11mm taller, contributing to a 15mm increase in headroom. The cabin also offers 61mm more width at elbow height and 72mm more legroom for rear passengers.

Storage space has likewise increased, growing by 67 litres to 278 litres with the 60:40 rear seats upright and 941 litres when laid flat.

Engine options in the new Cooper 5 Door mirror the range offered with the three-door model, including a turbocharged 100kW/220Nm 1.5 litre three-cylinder unit in the Cooper, through to a turbo 141kW/280Nm 2.0 litre four in the S.

On the diesel front, there’s an 85kW/270Nm 1.5 three-cylinder diesel in the D and a 125kW/360Nm 2.0 litre turbo four in the SD.

MINI Australia is still to confirm local timing, but we expect the Cooper 5 to hit the local market late in 2014 or early in 2015.
