Global carmakers aren’t the only ones unveiling new models at the Detroit Auto Show this week. A number of parts and accessories companies are also there showing off their wares.
In most cases, current tyre technology will see a tyre at its best when it’s new, before the ageing rubber and disintegrating tread make them less effective at doing their job as they wear down.
Michelin claims that its new tyre compound, containing high amounts of silica and sunflower oil, still achieved commendable stopping distances - even when it was half-worn.
The French tyre-maker says that a redesigned tread pattern causes the tyre’s grooves to widen as they wear down, improving their ability to displace standing water during wet-weather driving.
A second set of 150 grooves is ‘hidden’ in the shoulder of the tyre, slowly revealing themselves as the kilometres roll by.
Despite the ‘sticky’ compound and widening grooves, Michelin will offer a 60,000 mile (96,000km) guarantee when the new tyre goes on sale to US customers in April.
The Michelin Premier All Season with EverGrip will initially be available in 32 sizes, ranging from 15 to 18 inches.
