Iconic British brand MG, now owned by China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, will return to Australia in 2013.
The MG6 small hatch and sedan, revealed in 2010 and launched in the UK a year later, is expected to debut in Australia toward the end of March.
Later in the year, the smaller MG3 light car will arrive, following its international unveiling at the Beijing Auto Show in 2010 as the MG Zero concept. It has yet to launch in Europe.
Speaking with CarSales, SAIC's right-hand-drive market manager Xiaomin Xi said that Australia is an important part of the carmaker's expansion plans.
“Australia is an important market for us - we acknowledge that MG has a lot of enthusiasts from previous MG car owners," Xi said.
The brand is expected to launch locally with one Sydney dealership, followed in the months after by showrooms in Newcastle and Brisbane.
MG has already launched in New Zealand, where the MG6 starts from around $23,000.
When it launches in Australia, the MG6 will be powered by a 1.8 litre four-cylinder engine producing 118kW, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Automatic options are expected later.
