The MG Icon Concept is set to spawn a roadster version, and will soon head to production, according to a new report.

UK mag AutoExpress reports that the small crossover-coupe concept will spearhead MG’s return to roadster production, after the TF Mark II was finally laid to rest in 2011.

First unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year, the Icon concept is similar in size and execution to Nissan’s baby Juke crossover, but has two doors with a sloping coupe roofline.

The production car is tipped to be made in both hardtop and soft-top forms, with the hard-top theoretically competing with the upcoming MINI Paceman and the Juke.

A soft-top version would join a new niche, with the larger Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet being the only crossover cabriolet to reach production so far, and the Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet believed to be on the way.

MG’s line-up is currently made up of the mid-size MG6 hatch and Magnette sedan, and will be joined by the Fiesta-sized MG3 hatch later this year.

Production of the Icon-based models is not expected until 2015, but keep an eye on TMR for any further details.
