Ferrari North America boss Marco Mattiacci believes “Mexico is the next China”, a statement he made while participating in a “future of luxury” discussion panel in the US.

Mr Mattiacci pointed to an expected boom in manufacturing, international investment and wealth creation in Mexico over the next 13 years.

Speaking with Forbes, Mr Mattiacci said that the economic climate in Mexico suggested a likely rise in manufacturing across many industries.

“We see indicators that a lot of manufacturing is moving back to Mexico,” Mr Mattiacci said.

“The quality of education is absolutely outstanding, and you have a proximity with the US as well. Plus there has been a change of government.”

However, Mr Mattiacci doesn’t necessarily believe that Ferrari will be part of the Mexican sales boom, despite strong interest for the Ferrari LaFerrari model there.

Ironically, Ferrari’s recent policy announcement to make the brand “more exclusive” could mean there simply won’t be enough cars to meet demand.

“When we launched the new LaFerrari we are positively surprised that sadly we now have on-hand a list of 15 millionaires and billionaires who want to request that car,” Mr Mattiacci said.

“I can tell you that in 2003 when we launched Enzo, Mexico was not having that kind of request. That’s a big indicator.”

Assuming Mr Mattiacci is correct with his predicted boom in Mexico, it will be interesting to see which carmakers wealthy Mexicans turn to if they can’t secure a Ferrari.
