Merc's SLS AMG E-Cell prototype, revealed in a fluoresent yellow back in 2010, has evolved into the chrome-blue SLS AMG Electric Drive.

A new video released today offers the first on-road look at the near-silent supercar.

The unveiling of the electrified supercoupe follows news of the B-Class Electric Drive, both cars previewing an onslaught of new electric options in the Mercedes-Benz range.

Power in the SLS AMG ED is provided by four electric motors that produce a combined 552kW and 1000Nm of torque, marking a massive boost over the E-Cell's 392kW and 880Nm.

The coupe's acceleration figures have barely changed, however: while the E-Cell promises a 0-100km/h time of four seconds flat, the Electric Drive lists a claimed 3.9 second run.

Regardless, the SLS AMG Electric Drive is the most powerful offering to roll out of the AMG stables, and the regular 2013 SLS AMG GT gets a mere 435kW out of its 6.2 litre V8.

The new super-EV will only be offered in limited numbers, and whether we'll see it in Australia remains to be seen.

European buyers prepared to pony up the €416,500 (AU$517,200) - twice the European-market price of the regular petrol model - can expect delivery in July 2013.
