Mercedes-Benz is developing a new sub-SLS AMG rival for Porsche's 911 supersports coupe, according to reports out of Europe.

Reports of a reborn SLC have being circulating for the past year, but unlike the S-Class Coupe inspired SLC of the 70s, this new coupe is expected to be a track-eating sports car through-and-through.

Britain's Car magazine reports this week that the new SLC will arrive in time for the 2015 model year, and like its larger SLS stablemate, coupe and roadster variants are on the cards.

If recent reports of new downsized engines are accurate, a new turbocharged 4.0 litre V8 engine could be front-engined SLC's powertrain of choice.

Like the SLS, the SLC will likely be built on a mostly aluminium platform, focusing on light weight and handling. It will need both if it's going to challenge the iconic 911.
