The coming replacement for the Mercedes-Benz GLK, known as the GLC, has been spied testing again this week, stripping back its camouflage to reveal new details.

The SUV was also spied testing earlier in 2014, but this fresh batch of spy pics reveals the new model with slightly less camouflage.

And, unlike the current GLK, it is understood the new model will be available in right-hand-drive, opening the door at last to an Australian debut.

The GLC badge, 'GL' for SUVs and 'C' for midsized models, would place the new model closer to key rivals from BMW and Audi, in their X3 and Q5 models respectively.

Development for some areas of the GLC took place alongside the new C-Class, so expect the pair to share similar if not identical four-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid power plants are a strong possibility, and previous rumours even hinted at a flagship V6 performance variant down the track. Both rear- and all-wheel-drive will be offered throughout much of the range.

These new spy photos reveal a major departure from the outgoing GLK’s squared-off look, with styling more closely resembling the smaller GLA.

Front styling is in keeping with Benz’s current ‘family’ look, while the longer wheelbase and wider track should make for a roomier interior.

At the rear, the GLC looks to the new GLE Coupe for inspiration, debuting long and slender new tail-lamps.

Beyond the GLC’s launch later this year, a four-door coupe-style body could soon follow as a direct competitor to BMW’s X4.

Watch for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLC to debut in the months ahead, likely at September's Frankfurt Motor Show.
