And, unlike the current GLK, it is understood the new model will be available in right-hand-drive, opening the door at last to an Australian debut.
Development for some areas of the GLC took place alongside the new C-Class, so expect the pair to share similar if not identical four-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options.
Hybrid and plug-in hybrid power plants are a strong possibility, and previous rumours even hinted at a flagship V6 performance variant down the track. Both rear- and all-wheel-drive will be offered throughout much of the range.
These new spy photos reveal a major departure from the outgoing GLK’s squared-off look, with styling more closely resembling the smaller GLA.
Front styling is in keeping with Benz’s current ‘family’ look, while the longer wheelbase and wider track should make for a roomier interior.
At the rear, the GLC looks to the new GLE Coupe for inspiration, debuting long and slender new tail-lamps.
Beyond the GLC’s launch later this year, a four-door coupe-style body could soon follow as a direct competitor to BMW’s X4.
