Mercedes Benz's next Sprinter update has been caught hot-weather testing ahead of its imminent debut for the 2013 model year.

The new van is expected to get a new nose, bringing it in line with the smaller Renault Kangoo-based Citan.

Changes include LED daytime running lights, new headlights, grille and bumpers.

The interior should come in for a modest quality upgrade, with new styling, new technologies and new materials.

The next all-new Sprinter is several years away, so don't expect too much to change on the engine or transmission front. Updated powertrains and new emissions and fuel-saving technologies will likely feature, however.

Internationally, the Sprinter can be had with petrol, diesel and compressed natural gas engines, and can also be specified with four-wheel-drive

It also has a long list of safety features compared to many commercial vehicles.

The Sprinter is currently produced in three countries - Germany, China and Argentina and is also sold under the name Freightliner in the US where it is enjoying some success.

We'll let you know when Australian pricing and availability is confirmed.
