Mercedes-Benz has announced Australian pricing for the wicked SLS AMG Roadster, following its international unveiling earlier this year. The news also follows the hardtop SLS AMG's Australian debut last August.

If you've been keeping the cash for the $468,820 SLS AMG squirreled away in a savings account for the past year-and-a-bit, the interest earned might be just enough to get you the $487,500 Roadster instead.

Power for the topless Roadster is provided by Mercedes-Benz AMG's 6.2 litre V8, producing a hefty 420kW and 650Nm of torque - figures shared with its hardtop sibling.

Power is transferred to the wheels through a seven-speed Speedshift dual-clutch transmission, propelling the Roadster to 100km/h from standstill in 3.8 seconds. Another figure the Roadster has in common with the Coupe.

As with most supercoupes-cum-convertibles, the SLS AMG Roadster gets a number of chassis-strengthening modifications. Despite these enhancements, the Roadster is a mere 40kg heavier than the Coupe.

On the styling front, the Roadster and Coupe are largely identical front and rear. But, unlike the iconic gullwing design of the SLS AMG hardtop, the Roadster gets conventional doors and an electric folding fabric roof.

Available in black, red or beige fabrics, the roof can be packed away or locked in place in just 11 seconds, at speeds up to 50km/h.

Inside, the Roadster offers the same classic 300SL inspired features, including an upright dash and gimball-mount air vents.

 

Pricing

The SLS AMG Roadster will be available through Australian and New Zealand authorised Mercedes-Benz dealerships during January 2012.
