Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series Spied Testing

A more extreme ‘Black Series’ of Mercedes Benz’s SLS AMG is coming, and these new spy photos suggest the toughed-up coupe is not far away.

Spotted at the hallowed Nurburgring, this disguised prototype demonstrates a more menacing stance than any production SLS seen to date.

Despite the light disguise, the test car's pronounced wheel arch flares are clear; as is the more aggressive nosecone with enlarged brake ducts.

The flared wheel arches suggest a widened track, which will enable the fitment of wider rubber and improve cornering stability beyond the already impressive levels.

Also visible is a carbon-ceramic brake package. Already an optional extra with the regular SLS, you can bet it will be standard equipment here.

This prototype maintains the standard model’s rear valance and side skirts, but more aggressive bits could appear on the production Black Series.

Power will likely come from an upgraded version of the current 420kW 6.2 litre V8, as something of a swansong for the much-loved engine already exiting many other AMG models in favour of the new bi-turbo 5.5 litre V8.

AMG is also likely to improve performance via weight reduction, with increased use of carbon fibre and aluminium in its construction.

Mercedes is yet to make any official announcements regarding the production car, aside from describing the model as a ‘must do’ project for the brand.

Considering the timing of similar shots of the C 63 Black Series in development ahead of its recent launch, we don’t expect to see an official unveiling earlier than late 2013.
