If you're after a rugged and retro 4WD with buckets of power, the Mercedes-Benz G 55 AMG and its 373kW/700Nm 5.5 litre might be just the ticket.

If AMG's G-wagen isn't enough however, if you just need more, reports out of Europe this week suggest that Mercedes is preparing to trot out an even more powerful version.

According to Dutch website Autoblog.nl, the German carmaker is reading the G 65 AMG, motivated by the same 6.0 litre biturbo V12 that drives the S65 AMG flagship.

Power? A goodly 455kW and 1000Nm of torque - quite a leap over the G 55 available in Australia right now.

Here in the real world, the G 55 AMG hurtles to 100km/h in just 5.5 seconds. We can only imagine what sort of weapon the big 4WD would become when strapped to the larger V12 engine.

Mercedes-Benz has yet to offer any word on a more powerful addition to the G-Class line-up, and we'd suggest you not hold your breath.
